Q&A

我们将Q&A的内容精华,总结在下面供大家参考。点击上方的直播回放视频,获取更多问题的答案。

Question 1:

Do you have statistics for the following information? For example, for band 6.5. How much vocabulary do I need to memorize?

Neil: This is another common question. The IELTS is designed to test your abilities to use and communicate in English in as close to real life situations as possible. Yes, the vocabulary is one criterion for speaking or writing. Vocabulary is one of the criteria of the assessment. But it's not a case of learning thousand words, then using them in your writing or conversation, and you will get a higher score. What's important is to use the language appropriately, in other words, to use the right language for the right situation. When you do use less common vocabulary or you do use specialized vocabulary that's directly related to the topic, that’s how you will get a higher score.

Question 2:

How can I improve my speed of reading? I cannot finish them.

Neil: When reading a book, the biggest problem is time. The two things where people often make a mistake is that IELTS tests are quite long and very detailed and demanding. If you try to read and understand every single word, every single line, and then go back and do it again every time, you will run out of time. You need to find an answer to a question, there is no way that you can answer 40 questions in 60 minutes. You have 60 minutes to read three quite long texts and answer 40 questions. There are techniques to help you with that, such as skimming and scanning. Skimming is reading through the texts quickly just to get the general idea and that's the technique which involves thereading of first sentences of paragraphs, to find out what each part of the text talks about. So if the introduction is talking about history and the last paragraph is talking about the future, that’s what you know after skimming, but you don't have the details. Next we look at the question of scanning which is perhaps the most important skill in IELTS. What that means is, you look at the questions and the Information you need and then you quickly identify where inthe text that information is, then you focus just on that part of the texts. If you follow those techniques, you will improve through practice. If you practice reading every day you will actually increase the speed. If you follow the advice, it will work for you too.

Question 3: Would I lose a point if I mixed British English and American English together.

Neil: The good news is No. In the speaking test, absolutely no. Don't worry. It's a little bit more complicated for vocabulary. The important thing is, just be yourself, communicate naturally. There are differences between British English and American English spelling, you need to choose and stick to one. Because if you're writing British English, and then you write the same words in American English spelling, that would look like a mistake so that's a problem. With the writing, try to be consistent and stick with it.
